Do one’s own learning

While watching:
New experiments in self-teaching
Sugata Mitra at TED Oxford Jul 2010

2 points caught my attention:

  1. Children will learn to do what they want to learn to do.
  2. If children have interests, then education happens.

This leads me to see his experiments as evidences of one can do one’s own learning.

Research Questions

When students do research, they might find it difficult to talk to people. Allan Chochinov suggest to ask these questions.

Questions to ask someone whom you have no business talking to:

  1. What are people in your field fighting about?
  2. What periodicals do people in your field subscribe to?
  3. What question have I neglected to ask you?
  4. Are there two other people you suggest I talk to?

Design Research Conference 2010

TED.gov.sg

TED have spread to the Singapore government.

Singapore Economic Development Board ( SEDB ) organized their own branded TED, the Singapore Sessions.

SEDB selects challenges, bring experts in diverse fields together and let them shares their solutions.

Singapore Sessions are different from TED in 3 ways:
It is organize by a government organization.
It features speakers from the funder.
It does not share videos of conference.

Although SEDB does not share videos of Singapore Sessions, they share articles. I hope they will share videos in the future.

Aztec small bird

A story from the Aztec people of Mexico

It is said by our Grandparents that a long time ago there was a great fire in the forests that covered our Earth. People and animals started to run, trying to escape from the fire. Our brother owl, Tecolotl, was running away also when he noticed a small bird hurrying back and forth between the nearest river and the fire. He headed towards this small bird.

He noticed that it was our brother the Quetzal bird, Quetzaltotol, running to the river, picking up small drops of water in his break, then returning to the fire to throw that tiny bit of water on the flame. Owl approached Quetzal bird and yelled at him: “What are you doing brother? Are you stupid? You are not going to achieve anything by doing this. What are you trying to do? You must run for your life!”

Quetzal bird stopped for a moment and looked at owl and then answered: “I am doing the best I can with what I have.”

It is remembered by our Grandparents that a long time ago the forests that covered our Earth were saved from a great fire by a small Quetzal bird, an owl and many other animals and people who got together to put out the flames.
